St. Paul Closes Season with 12-6 Tournament Loss
St. Paul closed out its 2016 season on August 25 with a well fought game but ended up losing by a score of 12-6. St. Paul was ranked second in the lower tournament bracket and received a bye in the first round. They played Hope Blue at 7:20 at Telfer Park with the winner and the 6:30 first game winner playing for the tournament championship at 8:10.
Hope Blue scored 3 in the first inning and 3 more in the second to take a commanding lead of 6-0. The fourth inning saw St. Paul’s bats come to life. Eight consecutive St. Paul hits accounted for 4 runs to cut the lead to 6-4. St. Paul added 2 more runs in the 5th to tie the game at 6-6. Hope Blue was held scoreless in the third thru sixth innings. Hope came alive in the top of the 7th to score 6 runs and take a 12-6 lead. St. Paul could not score in the bottom of the inning to end their season.
Roger Neitzel led St. Paul with a perfect 3 for 3 night as well as Courtney Behm was perfect at 1 for 1. Five other players collected 2 hits apiece. Jaron Bertelsen was hitting the long ball by collecting 2 triples while Brad Thompson added a double. The play of the game was a smoking line drive to right field which Eric Steuer made a last second grab high above his head saving several runs at the time.
